MACON, Ga. — College hockey is coming back to Macon.
In a special two-game stretch, the University of Georgia hockey team will travel down to Macon and play two games at the Macon Coliseum in October. This is the first time the Ice Dawgs have made the trip down to the Coliseum since the Southern Soul Showdown in 2021.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring college hockey back to the Macon Centreplex this fall,” Mayhem president Alex Wall said. “As we continue to do our part in growing hockey in the South, we are excited to showcase additional high-level hockey that’s played right in our backyard.”
The Ice Dawgs will travel down from Athens to Macon for games on Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26. These days correspond with the Macon Mayhem’s own games, and that’s no mistake.
The Mayhem will play their games first, and everyone who purchased a ticket to Macon’s game will get a free ticket to Georgia’s game, which will be played directly after. Fans in attendance will get a doubleheader for the price of one ticket.
Macon, with a College Night theme, will play the Fayetteville Marksmen on Oct. 25 and on Oct. 26, which is the Mayhem’s Oktoberfest night.
The Mayhem will debut special college inspired jerseys, which a team representative said they are keeping under wraps so they can “knock this stuff out of the park for our fans!”
Georgia will play the University of Delaware Blue Hens on Friday night and Saturday afternoon following Macon’s matches.
“We’ve always appreciated the incredible support from fans in Macon, a city that holds a special place in my heart, especially since it graciously hosted our home games during the challenging COVID season,” Ice Dawgs head coach John Camp said. “With UGA football on a bye weekend, this is the perfect opportunity for our fans to explore the vibrant downtown of Macon, while cheering us on in our games against the University of Delaware Blue Hens.”
The Ice Dawgs recently played their first game of the season against South Carolina, who won the 2024 AAU Division I National Championship, on Friday, Sept. 13. The game ended in a 3-3 draw, followed by an unofficial shootout. Georgia will next face Florida on Sept. 20.
Meanwhile, the Mayhem will kick off their season on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. against the Birmingham Bulls. It will be the first time new head coach Dave Pszenyczny coaches a regular season game for the Mayhem.
A release from the Mayhem said further details on the hockey-filled weekend will be released later.
Visit Macon, who partnered with the Mayhem for this weekend event, is just as excited as Camp to introduce more people to the city.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Macon Mayhem in hosting the University of Georgia Hockey Team in Macon this season,” President and CEO of Visit Macon Gary Wheat said. “This event will be a huge treat for Bulldog fans in the Middle Georgia area, will welcome fans from outside our area, and will be a great display of collegiate hockey in the Coliseum. We look forward to UGA fans enjoying their beloved ‘Dawgs on the ice in Macon.”
