'A great way to keep the club going': Macon disc golf club finds warmth at Macon brewery during winter

Fall Line Brewery Company is home to more than just beer and food on Wednesday's. The Macon Aces Disc Golf Club set up putting lanes to beat the cold offseason.

MACON, Ga. — Wintertime often puts a freeze on many outdoor sports, including disc golf. The game where players essentially play golf with frisbees is often put on the ice when the temperatures drop.

However, a Macon disc golf club found a way to practice during the cold off-season. How you may ask? They turn Fall Line Brewing Company into a putting green.

On Wednesdays, long-time Macon Aces Disc Golf Club member, James Luppino, said the club uses Fall Line Brewing as an indoor facility.

"We always do league nights on Wednesday, but in the winter when there's no daylight, Fall Line has allowed us to come in here and use their big banquet room to practice our putting," Luppino said.

Stewart Rowell organizes these weekly meet-ups. He said the brewery's owner is an avid disc golf player.

"And he was like totally open to the idea of like you know using the big room to get it done," Rowell said.

Luppino has been with the Aces since 2008. This partnership with Fall Line only started four years ago, and Luppino said it's been a game changer.

"It's been one of those things that usually in the winter we disband and everyone goes their separate ways, but when Fall Line opened up and gave us this opportunity," Luppino said. "This has been a great way to keep the club going and grow new support."

Rowell said their Wednesday sessions are open to everyone, no matter the skill level.

"A lot of people say it can be intimidating, you know, with how like experienced we are, but we [are] always open to have new people come in try it out for the first time," Rowell said.

If you're ready to make aces of your own, Luppino said you can come to the brewery with or without a disc.

"We'll gladly loan them discs to play with, teach them how to play. It's great exercise and a lot of fun," Luppino said.

The group sets up putting lanes, grab partners and go head-to-head tournament style.

However, if you're looking to get in on the fun, there are only four more chances to try disc golf at the brewery. After that, Macon Aces will be back at their course, The Stone, in Claystone Park.
