'With a heavy heart': Caleb Cameron, Macon Mayhem interim head coach, announces departure

"Coach Cam" initially came to Macon as a player and eventually worked his way into coaching

MACON, Ga. — The last couple of years for the Macon Mayhem have been full of change and that’s not stopping anytime soon.

Central Georgia’s pro hockey team’s interim head coach Caleb Cameron announced that, after seven years with the team, he will be leaving the organization. He made the announcement on Facebook.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce I will be leaving the Macon Mayhem organization after 7 amazing years,” Cameron said in the post. Just know that was not an easy decision.”

Cameron, also known as “Coach Cam,” joined the Mayhem in 2017 as a player. He played for the team for a few seasons before moving into coaching. His jersey number is retired by the team.

“When I came to Macon in 2017, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into,” Cameron said. “I was in a new city playing professional hockey and just looking to move up to the next level as quickly as possible. I surely did not expect to still be here 7 years later, but I am so happy and thankful that I am.”

He added how thankful he was for each person he met. Whether it was his co-workers, his coaches or even the people who were the best men in his wedding. He gave each of them thanks.

Cameron also thanked his wife and kids for being “by my side every step of the way,” and noted that he made this decision for them.

He was hired as the interim head coach after new owner and CEO Chuck Norris fired former head coach Nick Niedert. Macon finished the 2023-2024 season in ninth place in the SPHL.

The team went 15-34, which was second to last in the whole conference. They also had three overtime losses and four shootout losses. They also finished with 37 points, which was one more than the last place Knoxville Ice Bears. The scored 141 goals, but allowed a league high 225 goals. Macon, alongside Knoxville, were the only two team's not to make the playoffs.

While “Coach Cam” moves on, he is assured that Norris has great ideas and plans for the team going forward. He added that he has full confidence in the team and is excited for their future.

He closed noting that no matter where he is, he’s a Mayhem fan for life.

“I have had an amazing time being not only a player for you, but a coach, a community partner, and a friend,” Cameron said. "Know that I am not far and will always support this team as much as possible. I will see you in October as the biggest Mayhem fan there is.”
