ATHENS, Ga. — Kirby Smart and Georgia Football were aggressive in the transfer portal this offseason, and they aren't done just yet.
Former Oregon defensive back Collin Gill announced his commitment to the Bulldogs Thursday afternoon. He made the announcement on his personal social media.
Gill redshirted for the Ducks last season and didn’t register any stats. He was listed as a cornerback, but will reportedly play safety for the Bulldogs.
The 6-foot, 215-pound defensive back placed his name into the portal after Oregon’s spring game. He originally committed to Temple last month, but backed off that commitment.
Coming out of St. John’s High School in Washington, D.C., Gill was rated as a three-star recruit. The defensive back, who’s originally from Waldorf, Maryland, was rated as the 77th-best cornerback in the 2023 class and the fifth-best player from D.C. according to 247Sports.
Gill is the 11th player to transfer to the Bulldogs. Below is a full list of each player and where they transferred from.
Wide receiver London Humphreys - Transferred from Vanderbilt (already enrolled)
Defensive lineman Xzavier McLeod - Transferred from South Carolina (already enrolled)
Wide receiver Colbie Young - Transferred from Miami (already enrolled)
Running back Trevor Etienne - Transferred from Florida (already enrolled)
Wide receiver Michael Jackson III - Transferred from USC (already enrolled)
Safety Jake Pope - Transferred from Alabama (already enrolled)
Tight end Benjamin Yurosek - Transferred from Stanford (post-spring transfer)
Kicker Charlie Ham - Transferred from Duke (post-spring transfer)
Quarterback Jaden Rashada - Transferred from Arizona State (post-spring transfer)
Long snapper Beau Gardner - Transferred from UCLA (post-spring transfer)
Defensive back Collin Gill - Transferred from Oregon (post-spring transfer)
The redshirt freshman will join a rotation headlined by All-American Malaki Starks. Gill likely won’t compete with potential starters Dan Jackson, David Daniel-Sisavanh or JaCorey Thomas, but could be a key second or third-unit player.
He’ll fight for playing time alongside fellow safety transfer Jake Pope, who transferred from Alabama this offseason and fellow redshirt freshmen Kyron Jones and Justyn Rhett.
Alongside Pope and former five-star freshman KJ Bolden, Gill is the third new safety to join the Bulldogs this offseason. Bolden may fight for a starting role, but Gill and Pope will compete for a primary backup role.
It’s unclear how impactful Gill will be in his first year with the Bulldogs, as he likely learns a new position. However, with injuries to Starks, Daniel-Sisavanh and Rhett in the spring, Gill’s addition will provide extra depth at a shaky position for the Bulldogs.
