Charlie Condon continues to make history, wins 2024 Golden Spikes award

Condon is the first player in Georgia baseball history to ever win the award

OMAHA, Neb. — Charlie Condon just made history once again.

The projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft just became the first Georgia baseball player to ever win the Golden Spikes Award.

"It's a tribute to the organization as a whole and everybody that's involved with UGA, Condon said. "I share this with everybody that was part of this historic season. It's a start of something new for Georgia Baseball. I'm real excited to bring this back to Athens for the first time."

Condon was named the 46th winner on Saturday before the first game of the College World Series Finals. He beat fellow finalists Oregon State's Travis Bazzana and Arkansas Hagan Smith.

The redshirt sophomore joins a group of current and former MLB stars like Bryce Harper, Buster Posey, Jim Abbott and Tim Lincecum.

He also joins last year's winner, former LSU Tiger and 2023 No. 2 overall pick Dylan Crews. Condon was a semifinalist for the award last season, but ultimately lost out to Crews.

"In a season that featured outstanding individual efforts from a wide range of players, Charlie Condon stood above the rest," said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball's Executive Director/CEO. "Charlie's 2024 season was nothing short of incredible to watch, and he is greatly deserving of this honor. We are excited for Charlie to join our brotherhood of Golden Spikes Award winners and look forward to celebrating his special season."

Condon most recently was named college baseball's National Player of The Year after he won the Dick Howser Trophy on June 13. He was also the first Bulldog to win that award as well. He beat out Smith and Bazzana for that award as well.

A day after, Condon received the 2024 Bobby Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award. He also named Baseball America and Perfect Game's 2024 College Player of the Year, was a consensus First Team All-American and was also named SEC Player of the Year prior to the postseason tournament.

"It's hard to put into words, what a great person Charlie is, he's got great parents, and he's a tremendously hard worker," Georgia head coach Wes Johnson said. "What he did for our program this year, he elevated our program and elevated the game that he plays. He moved around positions in the fall and that ultimately helped him as a baseball player. And now to see the result, it's impressive."

Condon currently leads all of college baseball in batting percentage at .443, slugging percentage at 1.009, total bases at 233, OPS at 1.565 and home runs with 37. His home run total broke a college baseball and Georgia baseball record.

He's currently ranked third in on-base percentage and just leads his team in walks with 57 and received a staggering 28 intentional walks.

The Marietta native had seven multiple home runs games and had a home run in eight straight games, which was one game shy from a college baseball record.

Condon's efforts helped the Bulldogs reach the Super Regional tournament and get one game away from playing in the College Baseball World Series.

While the team didn't play in Omaha, he still had one of, if not the best collegiate season of all time and will likely go down as the best player in Georgia baseball history.

"For him to win the Golden Spikes Award, he will have that for the rest of his life, and it's something for Georgia that we can talk about and recruit with that no other team can this year," Johnson said. "It's like winning the national title. There's only one national champion, there's only one Golden Spikes winner, and I'm proud it's Charlie Condon."
