JP's Extra Points: Panther Pit Has a New Look

The Panther Pit has been upgraded this year with a new track, a new scoreboard and new turf. The Panthers are hoping they can put on a show for their fans with this brand new stadium.

HoCo, Veterans, Northside and Warner robins. All the schools in Houston County play on a turf football field, and now you can add Perry High to the mix.

"I might be a little biased but it's got Perry all over it so we don't have to share it with nobody," Perry head football coach Kevin Smith said.

This is the first year Panthers will play on astroturf, and the players feel as if they have already made the adjustment. In fact, they prefer the turf instead of grass; running is easier, and they are better equipped and trained for when they play other schools in the county.

Second year head coach Kevin Smith is a huge fan of the new gridiron.

"The biggest thing is you know what surface you are going to get every day, even when it rains it drains out the bottom. We really like playing on it, we don't have to worry about getting the uniforms too dirty and all that stuff so its been advantageous for us," Smith said.

The panthers are 2-0 on the season and Friday night they would like to break in the new field with a win on their home opener against Westside. But they are also hoping the stadium can jumpstart even bigger victories for this season.....

"Its a new era, we are starting to win, the kids believe we can win. We get new facilities, fans want to come. We had 378 season tickets, and we got about 40 left and last year we couldn't give them away so there is a lot of buzz in the community," Smith said.

"They are proud of this facilities and they want to come out and support us come Friday night. "
