WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Many Georgia high school football fans view Skyler Williams as the best dual threat quarterback in the Peach State.
He added a new plaque to his trophy wall Wednesday, as GHSF Daily named him the week's "best player in the state." The Warner Robins quarterback racked up 305 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in the team's 54-44 win over Houston County.
"He's got a lot of confidence in himself, and that's what we saw from the get go - that he believed in himself," head coach Shane Sams said. "And, more importantly, believed in his teammates. And we saw a big team unity, a team playing together. So when you come out there and you have confidence in self, you're usually going to play pretty well."
That's exactly what he did Friday night. Williams completed 15 passes for 115 yards and one passing touchdown. He also rushed for 154 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns. One of those scores gave the Demons a 47-44 lead, which they held for the rest of the matchup.
Williams said it was a game he had in his sights for awhile.
"It felt great... after touchdowns, [I] had a lot of emotion," Williams said. "I mean, this game has circled since I've been over here. And I just was excited for the game and just happy to pull it out and just prove a lot of people wrong."
The GHSF honor is something that brings tears to his mother's eyes.
"It was phenomenal. I mean, just the things that he's done, just running over things, and just doing what he does, is so gut wrenching." Cynthia Williams. Skyler's mom, said. "I mean, I clutch my pearls every time he's out there on the field, but to see him out there and doing what he does and what he loves, it's more than a mom could ever ask for."
Williams said seeing his mom and family in the stands gives him purpose out on the field.
"I go out every week just wanting to make her proud, make my family proud, and just go out and play the best for them," Skyler Williams said. "And I mean, whenever I get to give my mom an opportunity to, like, talk great about me and, like, get her happy and emotional, that just is just a chip on my shoulder to go up there and do it again."
Williams said this honor wouldn't have been possible without his offensive line. He said he plans to take the O-Line to Buffalo Wild Wings with his quarterback coach.
The Demons have the week off, but face the Veterans Warhawks the following Friday.
