Griffin High's championship-winning football coach unexpectedly resigned amidst an investigation into alleged rule-breaking.

Steve Devoursney, the second winningest coach in Griffin High history with a record of 128-35 from 2001-2013, turned in his resignation on Wednesday.
Sources close to the situation tell 11Alive Sports that an investigation began in October centered on the transfer of a football player from Griffin High to Spalding High a couple of years ago. There are claims that the player got credit for work that wasn't his own.
DeVoursney led the Bears to their first outright state title in modern times and only 15-0 record ever in 2013. In 13 years as the Bears Head coach the Bears have won 9 or more games 11 times in the last 12 years and made the playoffs 13 years in a row. Griffin won the state AAAA title in 2013, the school's first in 35 years. The Bears have been in the semifinals three other times
During his 13 years as head coach, Griffin High football has thrived, winning nine or more games 11 times in the last 12 years. Griffin also sports an active school-record state playoff streak of 13 consecutive years.
Along the way Griffin has won the state title in 2013 — the school's first since 1978 — and made it to the state semifinals in 2005, 2008 and 2009, and the quarterfinals in 2003 and 2004, while winning region championships in 2006, 2009 and 2013.
The school board will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday afternoon to determine if they will accept the resignation.
