GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A Florida Gators football player helped stop a man who was raping a woman at a bar, according to 11Alive sister station First Coast News.

Linebacker Christian Garcia works as a security guard near a local bar in Gainesville and witnessed the assault take place.

He was taking out the trash when he noticed two people by the dumpster. He thought they were having sex, but then he realized it was not consensual.

"The girl was basically unconscious," Garcia said. "So I knew there was no way she could be giving consent."

Garcia confronted the assailant by grabbing him by the shoulders and telling him he needed to stop. The suspect, Christopher Shaw, threw punches at Garcia before escaping.

Police eventually found the suspect and arrested him for sexual battery.

"I hold strong moral values and I don't think anyone should be taken advantage of in that kind of way," Garcia said.

Garcia is a redshirt junior with the Gators. He is from Miami.
