ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia football fans call for it nearly every year.
The Bulldogs traditionally adorn their red or white jerseys for each game, but every once in a while, they'll break out a third jersey: their blackout uniforms.
While the Bulldogs haven't done so since 2020, there's recently been some indication they might wear them again. Multiple Georgia players, including Tate Ratledge, Cash Jones, Oscar Dep, Warren Brinson, Smael Mondon Jr., Lawson Luckie and more have been urging fans to wear all black for the upcoming game against Tennessee.
Even Georgia's equipment managers have gotten in on the fun, folding Georgia's regular red jerseys, while having a black jersey just barely in frame to the tune of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It, Black."
The Bulldogs have worn black jerseys just five times in the history of the program. They've worn them only twice since Kirby Smart has been their head coach.
For most of Georgia's roster, this will be the first time they would have an opportunity to wear Black jerseys in a game. However, some players like Carson Beck, Dan Jackson, Xavier Truss, Nazir Stackhouse, Warren Brinson and Ratledge were all a part of the 2020 team.
Georgia last wore them in 2020 against Mississippi State, where the team won 31-24. Before that game, Georgia wore them in 2016 against Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Bulldogs debuted the jerseys in 2007, where they wore them against Auburn and once again in the Sugar Bowl against Hawaii.
Despite all of these faceoffs resulting in wins, the Bulldogs have lost one game in black. Against Alabama in 2008, Georgia lost 41-30 with Smart on the Crimson Tide sideline.
If Georgia does trot out with black jerseys on, the team will likely aim for extending the record to 5-1.
In 2022, Georgia fans set a record for the loudest cheer in Sanford Stadium with 127 decibels. With a blackout game, and a possible strong performance against a top 10 team in the country, that record could be shattered two years later.
While nothing is confirmed, Bulldog fans, based on all the hints from Georgia players and staff, could be in for a special treat against Tennessee on Saturday.
