Georgia head coach Kirby Smart announces receiver Colbie Young to be suspended indefinitely

Young was arrested on battery and assault on an unborn child charges early Tuesday morning. He is the second UGA player to be suspended indefinitely this year.

ATHENS, Ga. — Another player on Georgia's roster has been indefinitely suspended.

Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young, was arrested early Tuesday morning on charges of battery and assault on an unborn child, and was suspended from the team indefinitely, head coach Kirby Smart announced on the Wednesday SEC coaches teleconference call.

“He’s been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved,” Smart said. “We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it, but had a good meeting with him this morning. We’re committed to continuing to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents."

According to an Athens-Clarke County police report, the senior wide receiver was involved in a physical argument with his ex-girlfriend. During the argument, the pregnant woman said Young grabbed her arm, physically pulled her out of his room and later "squeezed her torso and abdomen very hard."

According to the police department, he denied grabbing her, stating that her injuries weren't from him.

The Athens-Clarke County booking report said Young was arrested and booked around 4 a.m. and released on a $2,500 bond around 1:30 p.m. the same day.

On Tuesday, Smart initially declined to talk to the media about Young's arrest, stating that he hadn't had a chance to speak with him.

"I know you guys want to know about Colbie and want to ask about it. It's a pending legal matter and I don't have any answers right now," Smart said, according to UGASports. "I haven't even had a chance to talk to him yet, so I can't answer any questions about it right now."

Young is the second player to be indefinitely suspended  He joins fellow receiver Rara Thomas, who was indefinitely suspended and eventually dismissed from the team after he was charged with cruelty to children and battery. It was his second arrest in two years.

If dismissed from the team, Young would join Thomas and safety David Daniel-Sisavanh, who was dismissed from the team before the season got started.

Running back Trevor Etienne, while not dismissed was the third player suspended for the Bulldogs this season, as he sat out of the Clemson game due to a DUI arrest in the spring.

The Bulldogs players have been involved in at least two dozen driving-related violations, including DUIs, reckless driving or speeding. Most recently, defensive back Daniel Harris was arrested on a reckless driving charge after police said he was driving 106 miles per hour.

Smart, in the same press conference, noted that, despite the effort from the staff, they have not done a good enough job of preventing these issues.

"I certainly recognize we've got to do a better job, but it's hard. It's hard on our staff because we've got really good kids," Smart said. "We've got really good people, man. And our kids go out there today, and they have one of the best practices we've had all year on a Tuesday. And they're out there competing, working. You just want them to make better decisions as men off the field. And, you know, I take a lot of responsibility for that. It's tough, but that's the cost of leadership."

For now, the Bulldogs press onward without another receiver on the roster. Players like Dillon Bell will likely step into Young's role, while others like London Humphreys may see more playing time without Young on the field.
