ATHENS, Ga. — Before the SEC Championship is even played, Georgia football has already had a roster shakeup.
Cornerback Julian Humphrey, a redshirt sophomore, announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal. Humphrey announced on his social media through Hayes Fawcett of On3.
Humphrey served as a starter for the Bulldogs from the start of the season and started 10 games for Georgia. In that time he had 10 total tackles and four pass deflections. He also had a few lowlights, including allowing a late Ryan Williams touchdown, which helped Alabama grab a win from Georgia earlier in the season. According to PFF, he allowed 14 catches for 238 yards and two touchdowns.
Against Tennessee, Humphrey was pulled in favor of redshirt freshman Daniel Harris, who then started against UMass and Georgia Tech. Humphrey barely played in either game, and will now look for a new team.
Humphrey, originally from Webster, Texas, had a brief stop in the transfer portal last year. He initially entered shortly after Georgia's dominant win against Florida State in the Orange Bowl in the 2023-2024 regular season. Shortly after that, he took his name out of the portal and recommitted to the Bulldogs.
The third-year defensive back showed a lot of promise last season as a third-string cornerback. However, he struggled to live up to the potential he showed his redshirt freshman year.
When he graduated from Clear Lake High School, Humphrey was the 88th nationally ranked player, the 13th best cornerback, and the 17th best player from Texas. The former track star possesses tremendous athleticism and great size at 6 feet 1 inches, but it just never came together when he was a member of the Bulldogs.
His transfer announcement comes a little early, as the transfer portal doesn't open up until Dec. 9. That's when most players will likely enter the portal, aside from those still playing in the playoffs. Considering Georgia is set to play Texas in the SEC Championships, many would expect most players, including Humphrey, to wait until after the season. However, Humphrey looks to find his next team, likely for real this time, and Georgia prepares for a big-time game.
Starters Harris and Daylen Everrette's roles won't change, however, players like former five-star freshman Ellis Robinson IV may see an increased role. Others, like fellow freshman Demello Jones, may also see some play.
While it's unclear what Georgia's exact roster will look like next season, the Bulldogs currently have other cornerbacks like Jones, Robinson and Ondre Evans waiting in the wings alongside their starters.
They also have four-star recruits like Warner Robins native Rasean Dinkins and other four-stars Jontae Gilbert and Dominick Kelly currently committed, who are both expected to sign with Georgia on Wednesday, Dec. 6, the first day of early signing day for football.
