Verify: Here's why candidates are listed in a specific order on your ballot

Parties are listed in order of the total votes cast for their candidates in the last gubernatorial election in Georgia.

GEORGIA, USA — Voters in the Peach State shattered records on the first day of early voting.

"On Monday, Georgia voters surpassed the 2.9 million mark for total turnout - breaking 40% of all active voters. As of Monday at 12:30pm, Georgians surpassed the 2.73 million mark for Early Voting with 2,739,787 check-ins, shattering previous Early Voting performance," a press release from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's office said.

Every county and city has their own set of questions and races you can vote for, and your ballot looks the same for every voter in the same precinct as you.

One question we're curious about is if the candidates on the ballots are supposed to be listed in alphabetical order.

Verify: Should candidates in Georgia appear in alphabetical order on your ballot?

If you compare the ballots across different counties in Georgia, you'll notice the first candidate listed for every race is a republican.

While some might assume candidnates would appear in alphabetical order, Georgia law states "In a primary or special election, said names shall be arranged alphabetically by last name under the title of the office."

That means candidates in Georgia are listed in order of the party they belong to.

The first is the candidate who is in the same party as the incumbent governor.

Since Brian Kemp's a republican, republicans are listed first.

The other parties are listed in order of the total votes cast for their candidates in the last gubernatorial election.

Answer: No, for primaries and special elections, the law states "names shall be arranged alphabetically by last name under the title of the office."
