Students head 'Into Orbit' for robotics tournament at Museum of Aviation

The students had to build robots out of LEGO blocks.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — On Saturday morning, Central Georgia hosted its first LEGO league qualifier at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins.

Dozens of middle schoolers from across the state competed against each other to build robots out of lego blocks at the 14th annual regional tournament.

Based on the theme, 'Into Orbit,' the robots were judged on how well they completed different tasks.

Not only are the students having fun, but STARBASE Robins' executive director, Wesley Fondal, says this helps them develop skills in other fields.

"Obviously we're looking at getting more students involved in STEM, and this is what it's all centered around. Obviously here at Robins Air Force Base, we use a lot of engineers and scientists, and so we're trying to get students excited and interested in going into the STEM field," said Fondal.

STARBASE Robins is a part of a STEM education program put on by the Department of Defense.

The winners from this round will go on to compete in another state competition later on this year.
