GDOT: Quick work allowed Chatham Parkway bridge lanes to reopen ahead of schedule

GDOT said that all 16 lanes are open as of 11:25 a.m. This comes after a commercial vehicle transporting an excavator struck the bridge.

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Saturday, lanes were opened at the Chatham Parkway bridge over I-16 and on the interstate following a collision that shut down the area Thursday evening.

Georgia Department of Transportation said that all 16 lanes are open as of 11:25 a.m. This comes after a commercial vehicle transporting an excavator struck the bridge. Crews originally stated that lanes wouldn't reopen till Monday.

"Georgia DOT teams made quick work of the damaged Chatham Parkway bridge beam removal process," GDOT said in part.

Officials stated that the reopening is currently in progress, with barrier wall placement and lane restriping to create a temporary one-lane configuration in each direction. In the future, GDOt said that four of the bridge beams and parts of the deck would need replacement.

That timeline is unknown. GDOT said that it would work with contractors to review construction plans in later months.
