A week after his death, a Navy sailor's rental car resurfaces — in same river his body was found

The discovery of the vehicle was the biggest piece of physical evidence unaccounted for in Devin Jeter's death, but many questions still remain unanswered.

TELFAIR COUNTY, Ga. — There's a new twist in the case of Navy sailor Devin Jeter who was found dead in the Ocmulgee River last week.

Jeter's last known vehicle — a rented white Jeep Compass — was recovered Tuesday morning from the Ocmulgee River in Telfair County, not far from where his body was found last Monday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations announced in a press release.

Jeter, 25, was last seen at Hartsfield Jackson Airport on Nov. 7 while on his way back to his Navy post in Jacksonville, but he would not arrive alive.

The GBI says other sailors notified Jeter's family that he had not arrived as expected, causing his family to report him missing to the Atlanta Police Department on Nov. 8.

Three days later, Jeter's body was recovered by a local fisherman in Telfair County.

GBI investigators said Jeter's body did not have any obvious injuries, 13WMAZ previously reported.

According to the updated press release, there did not appear to be any visible damage to the Jeep, and the agency did not share any details about how the vehicle ended up in the river.

It's unclear who drove the vehicle into the river whether it was Jeter himself or somebody else.

The GBI says they still need the public's help in the case. If you have any information, you are asked to call the GBI's Regional Investigative Office in Eastman at 478-374-6988.

In an interview, Telfair County Sheriff Sim Davidson previously said that any information — no matter how small — could help them break the case.

"Anything - I mean anything like the GBI said in the statement, no piece of information is too small," Davidson said.
