WINDER, Ga. — Funeral plans have been announced for one of the students killed last week in a school shooting in Barrow County.
A memorial service for Mason Schermerhorn will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Jefferson Civic Center. The freshman student tragically lost his life on Sept. 4 after a teenage gunman opened fire inside Apalachee High School.
The family has requested that attendees wear red to the service, as it was his favorite color.
In lieu of flowers, those who want to remember Mason are asked to make donations to the family to help support them as they continue to grieve. An online fundraiser has been set up to assist the Schermerhorn family. To donate, visit here.
Mason enjoyed playing video games and loved Disney World and Legos, but loved his family most of all, his obituary reads. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, a brother, and grandparents.
The shooting also claimed the lives of fellow student Christian Angulo and two teachers, Cristina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall. Nine others were hospitalized with injuries. The suspect in the shooting, 14-year-old Colt Gray, has been charged with four counts of murder, with additional charges expected.
