Savannah police, FBI form task force

Local authorities in Savannah and the FBI are forming a task force to fight gang activity and violent crime.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Local authorities in Savannah and the FBI are forming a task force to fight gang activity and violent crime.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1euyNP5 ) Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Chief Julie Tolbert has accepted the FBI's invitation to assign officers to the Southeast Georgia Safe Streets Violent Crime Task Force.

The newspaper says members of the team will be provided clearance and full access to FBI databases as well as federal resources. They will also be deputized as federal agents with authority to act nationwide and receive additional training.

The task force focuses on gang violence and those engaged in firearms violations, transporting stolen vehicles, human trafficking and other crimes. Ten similar task forces already operate in Georgia.
