As the news reporters watched and the cameras rolled, Donald Trump and Joe Biden exchanged just a few words in the public eye, primarily generic niceties in the wake of a monumental presidential election.
"Well, Mr. President-elect and former President, Donald, congratulations," Biden said as he shook Trump's hand.
All told, just over 100 words were exchanged in public in just over 1.5 minutes. That may have been the plan all along.
The meeting primarily served to highlight the peaceful transition of power between the two leaders of widely different political views, an outgoing president wishing an incoming president the best of luck in their upcoming term despite their differences.
But the tone of both Trump and Biden's remarks was positive and cordial.
"Politics is tough," Trump said. "And it's, in many cases, not a very nice world. But it is a nice world today and I appreciate it very much."
Along with offering his congratulations, Biden reinforced his administration's pledge to assist the Trump transition team as they prepare to move into the White House on Jan. 20.
"I’m looking forward to having a, like we've said, a smooth transition, so that we can make sure you're accommodated — have what you need," Biden said. "We'll get a chance to talk about that today, so welcome."
Trump nodded his head as Biden spoke.
"A transition that is so smooth, it'll be as smooth as it can get. And I very much appreciate that Joe," Trump said
After Trump's remarks, Biden briefly said, "You're welcome." And then, he looked to the press and said, "Thank you all" and reporters began to be led out of the room to allow the real conversation behind closed doors to begin.
