MACON, Ga. — Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign stopped in Macon Friday as it launched a new bus tour.
The 'Fighting for Reproductive Freedom' tour through Georgia started in Savannah before the 10 a.m. stop in Macon Friday. Central Georgia leaders, like Macon state Rep. Miriam Paris, were there in support of the campaign's views on abortion rights.
"Reproductive freedom is so important. Not just for women, but for all Americans, our rights are important," Paris said.
She wanted to show her support for the campaign because, "They are going to support the reproductive rights of women."
Paris worries about Georgia's abortion laws, and former President Donald Trump's views.
"Once Republicans start to infringe upon the rights of any part of the population, then we know that we are in trouble," Paris said.
While around 50 people gathered to support the Harris-Walz Campaign, about a dozen formed up nearby to protest.
"We are here to share with women that there are other choices besides abortion," said Ann Beall, one of the demonstrators. "We want to be a voice opposing those who say that abortion should be a woman's only choice."
Beall said she and the rest of the group want to be a 'voice in the community' that aims to support women.
"Motherhood is to be loved and honored and respected," Beall said.
The Harris-Walz Campaign says their tour will eventually reach more than 50 communities in what the campaign calls "key states." The campaign says they're committed to making stops in "blue and red communities," because they believe abortion rights go beyond party lines.
Where Both Campaigns Stand on Abortion
As Election Day inches closer, the Trump campaign is working to clarify its stance on abortion rights. Last month, Trump's running mate, JD Vance, said Trump would veto a national abortion ban, while Harris alleged he would sign one into law.
In April, Trump said states should decide whether abortion should be legal, and at what point to deny access, according to the Associated Press.
Most recently, the former president contradicted himself on how he'd vote for the abortion measure in his home state of Florida. Trump first said he'd vote in favor of the measure that would expand abortion access in the state, before later saying he would oppose it.
Meanwhile, the Harris-Walz Campaign is making access to abortion one of its cornerstones. According to AP, Harris aims to sign a federal right to abortion into law. She, and President Joe Biden, have criticized abortion bans in some states.
Harris has worked for greater access for women to travel to get abortions, supporting one of Biden's executive orders on the matter. She also took steps to help protect medical records.
