What are the odds Mitt Romney runs for president in 2016? The former Republican nominee cited a memorable scene from Jim Carrey's Dumb and Dumber to explain.
You know the one: "One of a million," Romney told radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday.
"Somebody else has a better chance than I do," Romney said in the radio interview. "And that's what we believe, and that's why I'm not running. And you know, circumstances can change, but I'm just not going to let my head go there. I remember that great line from Dumb and Dumber."
There have been several public opinion polls that suggest voters have "buyer's remorse" about President Obama and would elect Romney if the 2012 election were held again today. Romney's new-found popularity is so great that Rep. Paul Ryan, his running mate and himself a 2016 presidential prospect, offered to drive the former Massachusetts governor's campaign bus if asked.
As for the Republicans he'd like to see in the 2016 race, Romney had high praise for Ryan and also mentioned Scott Walker, Bobby Jindal, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie and Jeb Bush as potential candidates "who have extraordinary records, great capability."
But back to those odds on Romney running. In another pop-culture reference, radio host Hewitt brought up author Malcolm Gladwell's theory in his book, Outliers, that it takes 10,000 hours to achieve success in something.
"Well, yeah, 10,000 campaigns perhaps, then I'll finally have it nailed down," Romney said.
