ATLANTA — Representative Sanford Bishop will retain his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives after staving off Republican challenger Chris West, his toughest challenger in more than a decade.
Bishop managed to get 54.60 % with 120,033 votes. West got 45.40%, or 99,807 votes, with 83% precincts reporting.
The win secures another term for Bishop who has been a representative since the early 1990s. Bishop outperformed many other democrats in the state as he managed to hold onto his seat as others lost in their races.
The senior congressman faced his toughest reelection battle in more than a decade in the Deep South's only competitive U.S. House race. Voters in southwest Georgia's 2nd District decided whether to keep 75-year-old Bishop amid persistent inflation and low approval of President Joe Biden.
West argued it was time to retire the Democratic congressman, while Bishop insisted his seniority means more federal dollars go to his constituent farmers and military bases.
