Leaders react to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter entering hospice care

Leaders across the nation and in Georgia are reacting to the news.

ATLANTA — Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady and wife of former president Jimmy Carter, entered hospice care at home Friday, according to the Carter Center. 

Rosalynn Carter was diagnosed with dementia in May. She is 96 years old.

U.S. Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock took to social media to express his sentiments for Rosalynn, saying she is "a remarkable woman of great faith." 

Former Georgia State Rep. Bee Nguyen said she is praying for the Carter family. 

Member of the Kennedy family and former first lady of California Maria Shriver said the Carters continue to inspire with their relationship. 

Habitat for Humanity released the following statement from its CEO, Jonathan Reckford. 

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library also offered its thoughts for the family. 

Georgia Rep. Shea Roberts added she's keeping the Carter family in her thoughts and prayers.

Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens said he's praying for Mrs. Carter as well.

Director of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he's thinking of the former first lady and President Carter, adding, "appreciating their lifelong dedication to making the world a better, fairer, healthier place for all."

The Alzheimer's Association of Atlanta reminds those with questions about dementia care to call its 24/7 helpline at 800-272-3900. The helpline is staffed with Master’s level social workers and can even do one-on-one care consultations to help families navigate dementia in all its stages.
