ATLANTA (AP) - Democrat Jason Carter is set to report $1.3 million in contributions to his campaign for Georgia governor, a sizeable haul in just over seven weeks and in a state where Republicans control every statewide elected office.

Carter, a state senator and grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, announced in November that he would challenge Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, who is seeking a second term.

Carter campaign chair Michael Coles told The Associated Press on Friday that Carter will report more than $1.25 million cash on hand. Deal has yet to report his year-end contributions, although he's expected to significantly increase the $1.1 million he had as of June 30.

In an interview, Carter says he's heartened by the support and noted the vast majority of donors hail from Georgia.
