PULASKI COUNTY, Ga. — It was another long election day in Pulaski County, but this time there’s only one race on the ballot and one winner. Wayne Wiley and Terry Hood were the final two candidates vying the for sheriff's seat.
“I’m feeling very excited, grateful, thankful," Wiley said.
Voters in Pulaski County elected Wiley as the next sheriff in Pulaski County. It was only 17 votes that gave Wiley the lead over his opponent Hood.
The board of elections reported that only 28% of registered voters cast their ballot for the runoff.
“I was hoping it would be a bigger margin difference there but we just had lesser people show up at the polls for the runoff election," Wiley said.
Wiley said since the May primary, he attended public events to hear what the community needs.
"To see what we could do better for them and that's what I listened to through the whole campaign trying to figure out what we can do better to serve the public," Wiley said.
Wiley has over 20 years of experience and is retired from the Georgia State Patrol, but he’s ready to start something new.
"Right back in the saddle again yes. I am looking forward to it. I know it’s going to be a challenge but I’m willing for it," Wiley said.
Wiley still has time before he’s sworn into office, but he said there’s still work to be done until then.
"We’re going to still work and listen to people’s concerns go to public meetings and things like that. Go and talk to the school board. There’s lots of things that I can do, we can do to prepare for January first which will be here before we know it," Wiley said.
Wiley is grateful to everyone that has supported his campaign no matter how big or small the gesture.
"Whether it was a sign in their yard or a donation or whatever or word of mouth just talking to other people about me that kind of thing. I want to thank all of my supporters for what they’ve done," Wiley said.
Wiley said he's thankful for the opportunity and calls this election experience long but rewarding.
