Pavement project begins Wednesday in Wilkinson County

GDOT says the project will patch and provide a surface treatment on Highway 57

MACON, Ga. — If you live or drive in Wilkinson County, you may want to pay close attention because road work is starting along Highway 57 this Wednesday.

Kyle Collins with the Georgia Department of Transportation says this work will help keep these roads safe. People who live nearby say the roads are always busy. so they think the work is warranted.

Claudia Hall says she always hangs out at the 'bus stop' and hears a familiar noise.

She says more than 50 semi-trucks, logging trucks, and other big rigs pound the pavement by her each day. That's one of the reasons why the Georgia Department of Transportation wants to fix up Highway 57.

"It is a pavement preservation project. As folks know in the east-central Georgia area, we are doing a lot of this on our state highways to preserve our roads for longer life," said Kyle Collins.

Collins says crews are performing patchwork along Highway 57 to the Fall Line Freeway near US 441. He says for about a week, traffic will be down to one lane with construction crews directing traffic.

"Then [we'll be] coming back a few weeks later to actually do what is known as a surface treatment, which is various layers of rocks. Its is going to give you a good stable riding surface," Collins said.

Collins says work will happen from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. They plan to limit work once school starts in Wilkinson County on August 1.

For Hall, she hopes smoothing out the highway calms down the noise.

"Maybe it will stop all that racket the trucks bouncing through here makes," Hall said.

Collins says the project cost $894,000 with state dollars paying the bill.
