Neighbors concerned about night light from Pure Flavor Greenhouse

Peach County homeowners say the light used for crops at the Pure Flavor Greenhouse disturbs them at night.

Some Peach County homeowners are upset because they have to fight one neighbor's light at night.

If you're driving on Highway 96 during the day, you'll notice the Pure Flavor greenhouse in Peach County. The facility employs about 100 people and helps produce cucumbers and tomatoes in the dead of winter. Neighbors like Mike Cantrell says it comes with a cost to the sky at night.

"It would be as though someone has moved in across the street and bought seven Hollywood spotlights and shined it on your living room," said Cantrell.

Scott Lopez took to Facebook with his concerns asking people to guess what time he took a picture of a bright yellow sky. He said he took the picture around 4:45 a.m. when the greenhouse lights were turned on.

"Cloudy nights, it's the worst. On normal blue sky lights like we have to tonight, it'll be bad," said Cantrell.

Commissioner Wade Yoder says the county is proud to have Pure Flavor, but he feels for neighbors who are affected by the light.

"We feel really bad about that. It's something that happens with development," said Yoder.

The greenhouse wasn't completely lit when reporter Sabrina Burse went to Fort Valley around 8:45 p.m. but Cantrell said the lights turn on at different times on different nights.

"It's early in the evenings. Sometimes it doesn't come on until midnight, other times 2 a.m., and almost always before you wake up before daylight, " said Cantrell.

FairyLouise Nixon posted on Facebook, "Fort Valley gets no dark hours." Cantrell says he and many other neighbors want their nights back.

"All we ask of them is that they become good stewards of the night sky. We'd be proud to have them as neighbors but right now we are very disgruntled because they aren't acting as good neighbors," said Cantrell.

The 13WMAZ team called a representative with Pure Flavor for comment and hasn't gotten a response yet. Commissioner Yoder says he believes the company uses blinds occasionally on the facility windows.

Cantrell says he and other neighbors plan on expressing their concerns at a Peach County commission meeting Tuesday and again at a public meeting with commissioners on Jan.15 around 6 p.m.
