Obama to review drought damage in California

President Obama reportedly plans to review drought-ravaged areas of California during a trip Friday.
BAKERSFIELD, CA - FEBRUARY 6: Workers drill for water for a farmer on February 6, 2014 near Bakersfield, California. Now in its third straight year of unprecedented drought, California is experiencing its driest year on record, dating back 119 years and possible the worst in the past 500 years. Grasslands that support cattle have dried up, forcing ranchers to feed them expensive supplemental hay to keep them from starving or to sell at least some of their herds, and farmers are struggling with diminishing crop water and whether to plant or to tear out permanent crops which use water year-round like almond trees. About 17 rural communities could run out of drinking water within several weeks and politicians are pushing to undo laws that protect several endangered species. (Photo by David McNew/Getty Images)

President Obama reportedly plans to review drought-ravaged areas of California during a trip Friday.

Obama is expected to stop in Fresno in central California en route to a Friday meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II at the Sunnylands estate near Palm Springs.

The Fresno Bee reports that Obama will "discuss the drought and federal efforts to deal with it."

In a Jan. 29 phone call with California Gov. Jerry Brown, Obama "reinforced his commitment to providing the necessary federal support to the state and local efforts" to cope with the drought, said a White House statement.

From The Los Angeles Times:

"Obama's visit comes as interest on Capitol Hill in taking action to alleviate California's water crisis grows.

"The Republican-controlled House passed a bill Wednesday dubbed a response to the drought, but the measure faces a White House veto threat.

"Democrats have attacked the House legislation for rolling back environmental protections. They have called for hearings and begun work on a separate measure."
