Phil Kessel responds to being left off Team USA roster

PITTSBURGH --- Phil Kessel took the podium for Stanley Cup media day and the first several questions the 28-year-old forward answered on Sunday had to do with the Pittsburgh Penguins’ playoff run.

Then came a query about Kessel’s omission from Team USA’s World Cup of Hockey roster, which was announced on Friday.

“You're always disappointed, but it is what it is." Kessel said.. “I think I’ve had a pretty good playoffs and I’ve always done pretty good for them when I’ve played (for Team USA). But we are in the Stanley Cup Final, so I can't be that disappointed.”

Kessel enters the final as the Pens face the San Jose Sharks tied for fifth among playoff scorers with 18 points.

His recent play, coupled with the fact he’s played for Team USA on the prior two U.S. Olympic teams, made Kessel one of the more notable exclusions from the U.S. roster for the World Cup, which will be held in August.

The final six players announced by USA Hockey were forwards David Backes, (St. Louis Blues), Ryan Callahan, (Tampa Bay Lightning), Brandon Dubinsky (Columbus Blue Jackets ) along with defensemen Erik Johnson (Colorado Avalanche), Jack Johnson (Columbus Blue Jackets) and  Matt Niskanen (Washington Capitals).

Sharks captain Joe Pavelski, who was already on the 23-man roster, said he was “a little surprised” Kessel didn’t make the final cut.

“There are a lot of good players out there, and, obviously, there are only so many spots,” Pavelski said. “I think the second half of the season, he’s rediscovered his game. He’s skating, shooting the puck and discovering he’s a good player.”

Pavelski added that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Kessel makes the next national team.
