HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. — A young boy is being praised for his heroic actions after he pulled his grandfather from a Georgia Lake when their boat flipped while fishing on Monday. Despite his lifesaving efforts, days later, his grandfather died.
The Haralson County Sheriff's Office posted the incident on Facebook. Deputies posted an update on Wednesday about the grandfather's passing, along with a statement from his family.
The grandfather was identified as Greg Calvin King from Bremen.
"Thank you to everyone for your kindness. My brother, Greg King, passed away peacefully this morning. Please keep our family in your prayers," his sister, Melinda King, told the sheriff's office.
It all happened at a lake near Old Bushmill and Asa Cash Road when King and his grandson were fishing, and their line got caught in a tree. Deputies said when King tried to jerk the line to get it off of the tree, the boat flipped, falling into the water.
The child was then able to pull his grandfather to the edge of the shore and to safety, calling his father for help.
“First, I would like to commend the bravery of this young man that fought to get his grandfather to the edge of the water,” said Haralson County Sheriff Stacy Williams.
Deputies added the young boy's father arrived at the shore with emergency responders, who then pulled the man completely out of the water, beginning life-saving measures. The grandfather was then taken to the hospital. He passed away days later.
"We ask that everyone please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this devastating loss," the sheriff's office said.
