WRIGHTSVILLE, Ga. — In Wrightsville, Georgia, some neighbors say the damage from Helene has made an already difficult situation with their landlord even worse.
One neighbor says a tree fell onto a home during the storm, but it still hasn't been picked up. Tomika Davis says she's lived in her home for nearly two years, and she's had problems with her landlord since the beginning.
“It gets worse, and nobody's doing nothing about it,” Davis said.
She says after Helene a tree fell onto her neighbor's home and uprooted her water line causing her to go four days without water.
“It was miserable. We had to use bottles of water, and it was very hot,” Davis said.
After reaching out to the landlord, Davis says he refused to fix the water line, but water isn't her only problem.
“My main issue is the mold. It has fungi growing out of it, and it has made me sick,” Davis said.
She says when she contacted the landlord, he assured her that it was not his problem.
“Refused to fix the floor, fix the leaking on the ceiling, and fix the soft spots in the floor,” Davis said.
She refuses to pay the rent and now the landlord has turned off the water and electricity in her home.
“Y'all want somebody to pay rent, but y'all don't want to fix nothing up," she said. "That's unfair to the tenant."
Betty Jean Swint lived in her home for a year and encountered similar problems with the same landlord.
“I didn't feel comfortable so that's why I moved," she said. "I kept asking and asking and he never responded."
