Warner Robins looking for new partner in homeless warming center plan after church bows out

A statement said the church is "unable to continue their involvement" during cold season.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Last week, the city of Warner Robins talked to 13WMAZ about their plan for the homeless in the upcoming winter months.

They said their plan to have the city-owned shelter up by winter wasn't possible, partly because the building required more renovation than they originally thought.

Instead of the shelter, the city posed last week that for this winter, they would be partnering with The Table, a local church, to make sure the homeless have a place to stay during particularly harsh cold snaps.

However, a statement says the church is "unable to continue their involvement" in the warming center during cold season.

The full statement reads:

"Unfortunately, The Table Church is unable to continue their involvement in the upcoming cold season."

Back in April, the city purchased a new city-owned homeless shelter. They hoped to have it open before the start of winter.

However, code enforcement officer Brian Wise says they aren't on track for their intended opening due to more renovations.

"We are in the final stages for architectural design submission for renovations," City Clerk Mandy Stella said.

They said the new timeline for the project was to have the shelter open by April of 2024.

It is unclear what the city's new plan is to house the homeless this winter if The Table church cannot help as a warming center.

Right now, 13WMAZ is working to find out what the city plans to do to help the homeless during cold snaps though this winter.
