'We're setting up a framework': Bibb Superintendent Dan Sims encourages parents to engage at upcoming school meetings

He plans six meetings at six schools to let parents listen, offer feedback, and be more engaged in their child's learning and beyond.

MACON, Ga. — After 90 days on the job, Bibb County School District Superintendent Dan Sims is still making his way through his entry plan. To do that, he wants to meet with parents in what could become one of his best collaborations yet.

A superintendent plays a huge role in shaping your child's education. That's why Bibb County Superintendent Dan Sims is hosting engagement sessions in hopes of getting parents more involved.

Sims has been Bibb County School District superintendent for a little over three months.

"I think people hear me, they know that I hear them, and there's a relationship that's being established, not just with the schools, but with the students, the staff, parents,” Sims said.

To keep on building, Sims says he came up with the idea of community engagement.

He plans six meetings at six schools to let parents listen, offer feedback, and be more engaged in their child's learning and beyond.

"The big idea of the six stops is to share what is available to students as we think about the ultimate goal of each one of them graduating college or career ready,” he continued.

Sims says there's also an opportunity to rebuild relationships the COVID-19 pandemic may have strained, helping Bibb county and surrounding areas with workforce and community.

"While we're not out of COVID, we're in a better space to reengage with partners, to reengage with organizations, reengage with the workforce, colleges and universities, and in doing so we're finding some tremendous ground we're able to cover," the superintendent explained.

He believes with the help of parents; the district can flourish.

"We're setting up a framework so that everybody can be authentically involved in the life of this school district and I feel like that's what we need in 2022 and beyond," he said.

Parents can attend any of the six meetings. Those begin on Monday, Nov. 28, each at 6 p.m. All sessions are open to all parents.

Sims has a podcast "In the Loop with the Sup" that is also for parents.
