'An odor of burnt marijuana' | Weed-smoking parents concern Bleckley County sheriff

Sheriff Daniel Cape said the reports complained about a few parents potentially smoking marijuana in the car on their way to drop off their kids.

BLECKLEY COUNTY, Ga. — The Bleckley County Sheriff's Office says they've gotten reports of students leaving their family's cars smelling like marijuana. Now, the sheriff's office and the Bleckley County School District are trying to figure out how to get a handle on it.

The sheriff's office said the reports came from Bleckley County Primary School's resource officer and the school district.

After talking to Bleckley County Sheriff Daniel Cape, he said the reports complained about a few parents potentially smoking marijuana in the car on their way to drop off their kids.

"There was an odor of burnt marijuana emitting from cars during drop off," Cape said. "Not a large amount, just a couple of vehicles."

Cape said that although the lingering smell is small, this is a first for Bleckley County. He said as of what he knows, there haven't been complaints regarding parents actively smoking in the drop-off line, just complaints of the smell lingering on the kid's body and clothes.

"People are familiar with that smell," Cape said. "Certainly when a concentrated setting like that where you're dropping kids off then people who are there, school personnel as well as sheriff's office personnel are familiar with that smell and it's those kinds of things that we're trying to let people know 'Hey, we're aware!'"

Sheriff Cape said they will continue to hold concentrated patrols in the drop-off line to address any questions or issues.

"We've got a small amount of complaints, we're just jumping on it from the get-go," Cape said. "We're not making any secrets or qualms about it. We care about our children and will do everything in our power to try to keep them safe and ensure those kinds of things don't continue happening."

If this continues, Cape says they will have to reassess and perhaps shift to another type of enforcement.
