Watermelon festival this Saturday in Cordele

Many of the events will happen at Crisp Region Hospital park Saturday.

Saturday, the Watermelon festival happens in Cordele.

Everyone puts in a lot of work to make this happen, but they play hard, too.

Jacob Jackson is a fourth generation farmer at Jackson Farms.

He says this year's watermelon crop is doing well.

"Well, right now, the rain's held off a little bit by staying dry, so we're trying to keep moving and I think it's going to work itself out. Market's good, so hopefully, we'll come out on top this year," said Jackson.

On top means they ship out 12 million pounds of the fruit at Jackson Farms.

Jacob says when he was a youngster, he had time for the watermelon festival -- not so much now.

"When I was a kid, that was the highlight of the summer -- you know, you get on a float and run around a little bit, throw some candy, you know -- it was the life, and then whenever I turned 10 years old, Pops was like, 'OK, it's time to go to work,'" he chuckled.

Monica Simmons also works hard. She's the president of the Crisp-Cordele Chamber of Commerce.

"You can't live in Crisp County and not eat watermelon," Monica said. "My son didn't like it when he was little. I said, 'Do not tell anybody.'"

Well, it's no secret what's going on with this year's festival.

"Then we've got arts and crafts over at Crisp Regional Park. There will be eating contests for the kids, seed-spitting contests for the adults, chunking contests," she said.

Wait a minute -- seed spitting?

"I decided I would enter the seed-spitting contest and it was just a fluke that I spit the seed 29 feet 11-inches," she explained. "So I have a plaque hanging in my office."

So go out to Cordele this weekend and have a red, white, and green kinda Saturday.

The arts and crafts part of the festival happens at Cordele's Crisp Regional Hospital Park along with other events.

You will also have the chance to buy watermelons there.
