'They need more housing' | Warner Robins hopes to make homeownership more accessible after infusion of federal money

They plan to build several two to three townhome units on South Armed Forces Boulevard. Kate Hogan says they'd hope some will be built in 2025.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Warner Robins is looking to help a few more families become home owners. They received $1.5 million of federal grant money through the Community Housing Improvement Program to go toward affordable housing.

That's good news to Lee Taylor. Every Wednesday through Friday, Taylor is hauling goods out of his store and into customers' cars.

"I've been here for 10 years and business has been great," Taylor said.

He owns the L & S Flea Market on North Davis Drive, helping folks fill their home with loved on goods.

"I sell stoves, I sell washing machines, I sell dryers," he said.

They have lamps, wall art, movies and more. Taylor says he has just what people are wanting.

"They want a deal," he said.

He says he offers affordable prices that keep people running back, but he says they don't just need a deal for the things inside the home.

"They need more housing, the new mayor is doing a great job getting people housing," he said

However, he said he'd like to see it redirected.

"I wish she could get more involved on this side of town, because this is where every thing started and everything stop," he said.

With the recently received funding the city is looking to put some new affordable townhomes on South Armed Forces Boulevard.

Hogan says the city of Warner Robins Development Authority owned property across from the VECTR Center that the organization planned to use for 20 townhouses.

This grant will allow the city of Warner Robins to place 10 homes there.

"These homes are for sale units. They will not be rental units," Community and Economic Development Director Kate Hogan said.

Hogan says the city is hoping to sell to low to moderate income families.

"Individuals who may be a first time home buyer, who has a good credit score, who can get traditional financing," she said.

Hogan says they hope to offer two to three bedrooms and a garage for cars. She says they hope to have some available by 2025.

She says the project is already very in demand.

"We have a waitlist already and we're still accepting names for the waitlist," she said.
