'Truly inspiring' | Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Warner Robins moving forward after land donation

While the city has been tight-lipped about the memorial's exact location, a veteran donated land along the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Parkway for the project.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The City of Warner Robins says they have selected the location for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

In a press release, the memorial will be located near the Watson Boulevard and Vietnam Veterans Memorial Parkway intersection, but they say the specific details will be released in the coming months, according to the City of Warner Robins.

The efforts to build a memorial for Vietnam veterans have stalled for years, a project which the city says dates back to 2011.

After years of advocacy, the city announced on Veterans Day that they had secured 5 acres of land for the memorial.

They say that after two unsuccessful efforts to secure land, Vietnam veteran Michael Driggers donated land to the city, which allowed them to move forward.

"The hard work paid off, and I want to thank Mr. Driggers, for this invaluable donation and contribution," Mayor LaRhonda Patrick said in press release. "This will forever go down in the history books."

The city says Driggers' land is located along Vietnam Memorial Parkway.

"This is a proud moment for our community," Aubrey Mitchell said. "The vision we’ve all shared for years is finally becoming a reality."

Mitchell is a member of the city's Vietnam Veterans Memorial Subcommittee, which has handled the design efforts.

The project has also been spearheaded by Rep. Sanford Bishop who calls the Vietnam Veterans' continued advocacy "truly inspiring."

"I am thrilled to see this meaningful project moving forward and look forward to the day this memorial stands as a testament to their service and sacrifice," Bishop said in the press release.
