HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — It doesn't feel that long ago that Jake Fromm was lighting up the scoreboard for the Houston County Bears.
From 2013 to 2016, Fromm served as the Bears' starting quarterback, taking the role full-time after his freshman season. Soon he was off to college, where he continued to have great performances for the Georgia Bulldogs.
However, after he was drafted, he somewhat disappeared. While he was once on everyone's TV screens as the quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs or was dazzling locals on the football field for Houston County, he was quickly taken out of the limelight once he entered the NFL.
So the question, what happened to Fromm? What did his career become after leaving Georgia? Did he ever live up to the potential he showed when he was balling out in Central Georgia?
Back in high school, Fromm was nothing less than dominant. He threw for over 1,000 yards every year and over 3,000 yards and over 30 touchdowns from his sophomore season onward. His junior season saw him throw over 4,000 yards, while he threw over 40 touchdown passes in his senior season. His finished his high school career with
Afterward, as a four-star prospect, Fromm committed and signed with Georgia. He sat behind former five-star Jacob Eason until the Washington State native went down with an injury. Fromm came in and never left.
He started the whole season and led the Bulldogs to the 2017 National Championship, which ended in a heartbreaking loss to Alabama.
Fromm remained as the starter for two more seasons. He threw for over 2,000 yards every single season of his career. He finished his collegiate career with 8,224 passing yards and 78 touchdowns.
Fromm was then drafted in the fifth round by the Buffalo Bills, where he quickly disappeared from the public eye.
So where is he now? He's currently a practice squad player for the Detroit Lions. His NFL career seemed all but over after he was initially waived from the Washington Commanders on May 17 this year.
He had been on their practice squad after he was picked up after a disastrous stint with the New York Giants, which was the only time he saw NFL action. He played in three games, threw for 210 yards, one touchdown pass and ran for 65 yards. He also threw three interceptions and only completed 45% of his passes.
When Fromm's career looked nearly over, the Lions picked him up just before a preseason game against the Steelers. He was quickly thrust into action late in the game and brought the Lions down the field to set up a scoring drive.
His one-game performance was so impressive, despite being released, he was resigned onto the practice squad, where he's been ever since.
While fans of Fromm may not see him on the field anytime soon, they can hear him and former Georgia punter Drew Butler on the Punt & Pass podcast. Additionally, Fromm may be seen at his summer camp, which he traditionally holds in Athens.
Who knows how long he'll remain in the NFL, but he'll certainly keep hyping up all his alma maters, even if his records are broken in the process.
