Warner Robins police officer given Valor Award for action in Centerville standoff

Officer Trey Thomas was recognized at Monday's city council meeting. He was the first Warner Robins Police officer to arrive on the scene at a police standoff two weeks ago.

Warner Robins Police awarded one of their officers with the Valor Award Monday night. It's the highest honor an officer can receive from the department.

Officer Trey Thomas was recognized at Monday's city council meeting. He was the first Warner Robins Police officer to arrive on the scene at a police standoff two weeks ago.

He found Centerville Police Corporal Jeremy Mashuga sitting behind a police Tahoe after being shot once in the abdomen.

Perry Baggett allegedly began firing at the officers from inside his home.

Officer Thomas returned fire 4 times, eventually getting Mashuga to safety.

Police Chief Brett Evans says he was blown away after watching Thomas' body cam from that night.

"For somebody to be that calm, cool, and collected, have a plan to get an injured officer out of there, he triaged his wounds, he fired under cover fire, you just couldn't have asked for better," said Evans.

The standoff is still under investigation by the GBI.
