WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Mary Spires says she began crocheting as a kid. "I really enjoy trying out new patterns. I've discovered scrubbies, so I've made a lot of those as of late."
Although it's mostly been a hobby, she says she jumped at the chance to make nests and pouches for the animals in Australia.
"Mostly, I'm an animal lover. My first job was at an animal hospital when I was like 16. I have lots of pets, I've rehabbed wild animals," she says.
Now, she's making nests.
"It can be used for birds, rabbits, any kind of small animals," she says.
Spires says nests take about an hour to make, but they're easy. "They're the most basic stitches, I mean, a beginner can easily do it."
This will be just one of many nests, pouches, and blankets needed to help the millions of animals without homes.
"We're just a group of friends trying to get together on Sunday to spread the word of the need for anything that the rescuers need in Australia," says Brandy Yentzer, who's helping organize a full crafts event in Warner Robins.
She says they'll need all the volunteers they can get in order to be successful.
"We'll have a few sewing machines, so we're going to start with people cutting the patterns, then people pinning the patterns, then the people actually sewing them," she says.
Between the crafting and donations of money and supplies, Yentzer says the Middle Georgia Crafters will take it all to a hub in Tennessee to be mailed overseas.
Sunday's event takes place at Lush Art on Russell Parkway in Warner Robins from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
