Warner Robins begins construction on new Veterans Park

Warner Robins City Hall is a construction zone -- the city is building a “Veterans Park” in front of the building to honor veterans in the community.

In front of City Hall, construction crews are clearing out space for the new park. Five arrow-shaped monuments will have the names of servicemen and women that you can engrave for $100.

There also will be commemorative bricks that citizens can dedicate to veterans for $75.

For one veteran, that price tag is too much.

“You know, people my age are living on a limited income obviously and well...there's just not enough money to go around, to be honest,” said Eugene Doyle.

Doyle is a Korean War Air Force veteran and former POW. He says he would buy a wall engraving for him and his dad, a World War II veteran, if he could afford it. He says walking in the park would still be en emotional experience for him.

“It brings back memories if nothing else,” he said. “My war was 60-something years ago but you still don't forget it.”

Doyle doesn't know how he would pay for his and his dad's engraving, so he joked he's looking for help.

“I'll find somebody that will,” he laughed.

The city does plan to have this project completed on Veterans Day of this year.

If you want an order form for a brick or an engraving spot on the wall they are available at the Tax Office at City Hall or on the city's website. City officials did stress that if you want your name or your brick placed by the Veterans Day grand opening, you'll need to have your orders in by September 1.

Doyle volunteers two days a week at the Aviation Museum and calls the park a great idea.

The bricks for purchase can support veterans, military personal, and Robins Air Force Base. Brick and wall space will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be 40,000 bricks available and each arrow-shaped monument can take about 600 engravings.
