Paula Johnson and her mom Brenda moved to Washington County from the Atlanta area 2 years ago looking for a change of pace. What they found was a calling to help others.
They began a charity called Waco Care and Share, where they collect donated food and clothing and give them to those in need.
"We just take those clothes and sort them and separate them and people are allowed to come in and take what they need for themselves and their family and it's all free of charge. ," Johnson says.
More people have been donating to the Waco Care and Share, and hundreds of families in need come through each month.
But now, they've outgrown their old building, which has had water damage.
So, volunteers are pitching to build them a new building. All the supplies and labor are donated, including wood carved from the ice storms that hit Washington County in February.
Recovery groups and church ministries have all been pitching in. One church passed up a mission trip overseas to help out at home.
"It makes a difference here when we can ride by every week and see what has happened and see the changes that will be made in the lives of people we know," says Pastor Gary Mimbs.
The new building with air conditioning could be finished as soon as this week.
