Video game addiction is now considered as legitimate mental illness

According to the World Health Organization, while gaming is a fun activity, it can take control of your life.

Can you get addicted to playing video games?

Wel, the World Health Organization confirmed that gaming addiction is now a legitimate form of mental illness.

The organization describes video game addiction as playing video games for an unhealthy amount of time, feeling like you can't stop, putting gaming over other life priorities and continuing to play games despite negative consequences.

They added while gaming is a fun activity, it can take control of your life.

Xavier Tarbox plays video games nearly everyday. He started playing around three years old, simply because he enjoys it.

"It's something to just keep your mind constantly moving so you're not just staying still."

For Xavier, it's something he enjoys doing with his dad. He says he's never felt like he was addicted to playing, but for dad it's a different story.

"I actually found myself to the point where I was calling into work," says Andrew Tarbox.

Adam says for a while he had to quit gaming completely, after falling victim to the feeling of "escape."

The World Health Organization describes video game addiction as "playing video games for an unhealthy amount of time, not feeling like you can stop, putting gaming over other life priorities, and continuing to play games despite negative consequences."

"The fact that life in general is so demanding, so stressful, that you can pull yourself out into a fantasy world that you're something that you want to be," says Adam.

While that "fantasy feeling" may be fun, the WHO says it's something that can take control of your life.
