Our National Weather Service records go back over a century, but have they ever recorded 100-plus in May?
The springtime sun continues to bring summer-like heat. Temperatures are expected to head into the upper 90s by late week, and maybe even the triple digits come the weekend, but have we ever seen that before on record in May?
Taking a look at the numbers from the National Weather Service, records for Macon go back 120 years to 1899. 98 degrees has been recorded 10 times in May, the earliest back in 1913, the most recent in 2011.
Macon has hit 99 degrees twice in May -- in 1953 and in 1967 -- but what about 100?
According to the data, there has never been a triple-digit May day since they've been keeping track since 1899. The earliest in the year we've ever seen 100 degrees was on June 1. That's happened three times -- 1945, 1953, and 2011.
It's Verified -- if we manage to reach 100 degrees before the month of May ends, it will be the first time in recorded history Macon has seen triple-digit heat in May, some big time heat potentially bringing in record numbers for the first time in at least 120 years.
