Two indicted for allegedly stealing $65,000 from Milledgeville mental health agency

A former employee of the Oconee Center Community Service Board is accused of stealing checks and forging signatures, according to an indictment.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Two women have been indicted for allegedly defrauding a Milledgeville mental health agency of $65,000, according to the Georgia Attorney Generals Office

According to a news release, Sheldonna Williams, 43, of Sandersville is a former employee of the Oconee Center Community Service Board and is accused of using 21 stolen or fraudulent checks to steal money from the mental health board in Baldwin County.

That board oversees the Oconee Center, which provides mental health, addiction treatment and developmental disability assistance for people in Baldwin, Hancock, Jasper, Putnam, Washington and Wilkinson counties, according to the center's website

The indictment accuses Williams of stealing checks from the board, forging the signature of authorized signatories and depositing the funds into a bank account created by and controlled by Latina Thompson, 43, of Sandersville.

The two were indicted on July 10.

“Community Service Boards play an important role in every one of our communities by delivering behavioral health treatment and services to our most vulnerable citizens,” Attorney General Chris Carr said in the news release.  "Anyone who unlawfully obtains funds intended to sustain this critical mission will be held accountable."

According to the indictment, the checks were deposited into a bank account for Angels Way Healthcare Services, a business Thompson registered with the Georgia Secretary of States Office.

The Grand Jury indicted the pair on one count of racketeering, three counts of forgery and three counts of theft.

"We will not tolerate this type of criminal activity as we continue to support our state’s ongoing efforts to ensure all Georgians have access to quality mental health and wellness care,” Carr said.

The case was investigated by the Milledgeville Police Department with Georgia's Office of the Inspector General.
