Two dead after plane crashes in Americus pecan orchard

The FAA is at the scene trying to figure out what caused the plane to go down

AMERICUS, Ga. — The FAA is investigating after a small plane crash killed two people just outside Americus on Wednesday morning.

Columbus CBS-affiliate WRBL reports the crash happened around 10 a.m. in a pecan orchard on Old Andersonville Road, just about a mile north of the Jimmy Carter Regional Airport.

Wreckage of the plane was discovered by workers in the orchard, who then called the police.

Several hours later, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office confirmed two people inside the downed Cirrus SR22 had died.

Chief Deputy Eric Bryant told WRBL he could not confirm if the plane was coming to or leaving from the airport, and the victims have not been identified.

Several agencies are back at the scene trying to figure out a cause for the accident.
