Tubing company feels the impact of closures at Macon's Amerson River Park

Businesses that rely on people floating the Ocmulgee River are feeling the hurt after the weather has forced key access points to close

Parts of Macon’s Amerson River Park are closed due to minor flooding, but those closures are impacting more than just regular park goers.

Macon Outfitters’ “$10 River Tubing” has been closed during what would usually be a busy weekend for the business.

“Business has been slow this week. We’ve had to be closed this entire weekend. But [the closure] was due to safety reasons, there was no way around it,” said Robert Jackson.

Macon Outfitters also partners with Float Daze, an organization that works to keep the Ocmulgee River clean.

Robert Jackson is president and says the weather rained on quite a big parade.

“The 3rd Annual Memorial Float Day got canceled,” said Jackson.

The days of rain halted the river cleanup and put the plans of several hundred people on hold.

“We had a 200-person pre-sale, and we were also expecting somewhere around 3,000 people to come out,” said Jackson.

At $10 per ticket for a tube, Jackson isn’t letting the wet weather dampen his spirits.

“We’ll make it up later. We’re taking a week off work and having to pay for it, but we will bounce back,” said Jackson.

Access to the north side of the river at the park is closed due to flooding, and it’s the same path that the company’s buses use to drop people off into the water.

“After all the rain is gone and Ben Jones gives me the OK, I’m going to say let’s get back out here [and] I’m hoping it’s by the end of the week,” said Jackson with a smile.

The Memorial Day river cleanup is rescheduled to June 23, weather permitting.
