Trails Day Macon brings support for the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail

NewTown Macon hosted several tours and events to celebrate the Ocmulgee Heritage Trails' recent and future development

MACON, Ga. — NewTown Macon hosted several events on Saturday for Trails Day Macon, a day dedicated to “enjoying and supporting” the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail [OHT].

The event had several tours given throughout the day. It started at 9:30 a.m. with a behind the scenes trail bike tour, where bike riders could explore the new sections of the OHT. Retired Macon-Bibb County Engineer Bill Causey and Erin Keller from NewTown Macon hosted the tour.

The second tour was a Linear Park/Walnut Street hard hat tour at 11:30 a.m., where people toured both places and learned the history and future plans for Linear Park.

At 11 and 11:45 a.m., a reading of ‘All the Way to the Ocean’ by Joel Harper, was held near the playground by the NewTown event flag. Families were encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit.

A “Trails Day Adventure Challenge” was also available at the park. Participants could complete certain tasks and redeem prizes at the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail Master Plan Reveal Party.

Next on the schedule was an OHT Photo Walk, where, at 5 p.m., people could take various photos of the trail at Jackson Springs Park. The tour was led by Jave Bjorkman, the Founder and Creative Director of And So We Go Productions.

The final tour of the day is set for 9 p.m. NewTown Macon described it as a “spooky” Rose Hill After Dark tour. The tour is limited to only 40 people, at $30 a person. Causey will lead patrons through the trail and the Rose Hill cemetery with their path only lit up by flashlights.

The Ocmulgee Heritage Trail Master Plan Reveal Party took place at Fall Line Brewing Co. from 6 to 8 p.m. and unveiled a 25-year plan for the trail. Future projects were discussed and attendees 21-years or older could enjoy a special beer named Trailblazer.
