MACON, Ga. — The GBI has released more information about what led up to a Bibb deputy shooting a man during a car chase late Thursday night.
According to a news release, the sheriff’s office was called to the Pleasant Hill neighborhood after a report of shots being fired. When the deputy arrived, they noticed a car speeding on Walnut Street.
The deputy tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver – identified as 35-year-old Carlton Alexander Jr. – didn’t stop and a chase began. The GBI says Alexander hit a curb, causing the car to stop in the middle of Riverside Drive.
He then got out of the car and allegedly began shooting at the deputy, hitting the patrol car four times. Cpl. Travis Carlisle shot back, hitting Alexander in the leg. The deputy was uninjured.
Deputies performed first aid until an ambulance arrived to take Alexander to the Medical Center, Atrium Health Navicent. He was then released and booked into the jail on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a firearm during commission of a crime, criminal damage to property and possession of stolen property.
Once complete, the GBI will turn its results over to the Macon DA for review. Carlisle is on administrative leave pending the results of the GBI and Bibb Internal Affairs investigations.
