WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — What's the magic number when it comes to tipping your food delivery driver?
Is it 15%? 20%?
Many people aren't sure.
Fine dining used to mean going out to a restaurant for your favorite food, but these days, thousands of on-demand delivery drivers like Latanchila Ngashon can drop it right to your door.
"Driving, I would say probably 4 months at the most,” she said about the length of time she's been working as a delivery driver..
Many take on deliveries as a second income.
For a delivery driver, getting paid isn't always as fast or convenient as placing your order.
Factor in things like delivery amounts, hours, and restaurants-- all depending on who they drive for, but the only way money is 100% guaranteed is tipping.
"Tipping is a courtesy thing, and I'm not saying that you have to tip, but it’s out of courtesy such as a waitress, a bagboy, something like that," the woman explained.
Tipping can be a touchy subject and the rules can be unclear.
A finance buzz survey finds that the average food delivery tip is 15.7%
The survey also says delivery time, professionalism, and cost of delivery fee goes into making the decision to tip.
"I believe in customer service, I believe in you get what you pay for, and I believe in giving them the food hot --I don't want no cold food -- so when it comes to tipping, tipping is what motivates you to get there on time and faster," she said.
As a driver, the hourly rate can float between $11-$25 an hour but stops can be spaced across town.
The 5-star rated delivery driver says some trips are better than others but giving a little extra to your driver is something to be considered.
"I'm not asking for a large tip, a $5 tip or a $10 tip. Just be courteous and give a dollar, you know? That's what I think of it," she said.
The DoorDash app automatically suggests a tip based on your distance from the restaurant.
However, the standard tipping amount is anywhere from 15% to 20% of the total.
